Foveon comes from fovea: 

small depression on the retina surface, where they are most sensitive elements which are representing the center of the eye sharpest vision 

 
 


 
The most characteristic notice, even of Nikonland fans,  dp quattro Series, or Merrill ones, is certainly in the color palette that expresses Foveon sensor without any need to use post-production softwares
