    At the ending of the extensive series of articles resulting from our falling in love with Foveon sensors on Sigma mirrorless cameras,

    this further article hope will serve to give a sense of the very marked differences that link different projects even if born under the same brand, over the years.
    To compete in a parallel slalom around the same subjects portrayed in different conditions, in daylight and even in a flash light interiors, two mirrorless Sigma that may not be more different in shape, size, weight, and probably, also destination:

    this sdQuattro with Sigma Art 50/1,4 (together almost three pounds of weight) and that dp3 Merrill with his 50/2.8 Macro, that don't reach 5 ounces.
    Indipendently from common matrix, the Foveon sensor that solves so much more in respect of the Bayer array,
    [attachment=103862:ccs-2-0-61612500-1483132077.png]
    (where the Foveon overcomes Bayer twice than the resolution on the horizontal and vertical axes)

    the differences between the two appliances are so many, starting the setting of use (viewfinder for the SD4, monitor for dp3), to continue with the design philosophy which provides dedicated optics and incorporated into dp series, instead interchangeable for the other mirrorless, to end up with different resolution, since 15.4/25 Mpx for dp series,  to the 29.5/39 Mpx (second digit indicates the equivalence value to a Bayer matrix).

    "The defects, those, you'll take all" my grandfather said, and Sigma confirms this assumption that certainly comes from the file processing difficulties, that in the density of informations has its main and indisputable pride.
    None of both mirrorless are free from trouble focusing the subject, especially outside the AF central area, because of too few focus areas and the RAW metabolic difficulties, on both cameras, either in postproduction.
    Unable to amplify the signal with respect to noise, they are systems that are used very few times over the nominal sensitivity, in order to avoid of frustrate the claimed advantages.
    But the effects that from the earliest versions of the DP series, even before the present one, (dedicated to Mr Merrill, creator of the sensor), are justified from the color results and the wealth of information on each of the files so difficult ... achieved .

    Here we can see how this  reading ability may differ, also in the same subject and shooting conditions.
    Also considerably

  2. Sigma sd VS Sigma dp: Quattro contro Merrill

    [attachment=103251:0084 _DSC2295 1-160 sec a f - 9,0 Max Aquila photo © _.JPG]

    A conclusione della nutrita serie di articoli scaturiti dal nostro appassionamento per le capacita' del sensore Foveon delle mirrorless Sigma,
    [attachment=103256:sensor_image.jpg]
    questo ulteriore articolo speriamo serva a dare il senso delle marcate differenze che...accomunano i diversi progetti nati sotto lo stesso marchio in questi anni.
    A confrontarsi in uno slalom parallelo intorno agli stessi soggetti ritratti in differenti condizioni, a luce diurna ed anche in interni a luce flash, due mirrorless Sigma che non potrebbero essere piu' diverse per forma, dimensione, peso e, probabilmente, destinazione finale:
    [attachment=103250:0083 _DSC2287 1-200 sec a f - 8,0 Max Aquila photo © _.JPG]
    la sdQuattro con Sigma Art 50mm f/1,4 che insieme assommano quasi un chilo e mezzo di peso e la dp3 Merrill con il suo 50mm f/2,8 Macro incorporato, che non arrivano a 5 etti.
    A prescindere dalla matrice comune, quel sensore Foveon che risolve cosi' tanto di piu' dalla...matrice di Bayer,
    [attachment=103255:foveon bayer.PNG]
    (dove il Foveon si avvantaggia rispetto il Bayer del doppio della risoluzione sugli assi orizzontali e verticali)

    le differenze tra i due apparecchi sono davvero tante, a partire dall'impostazione di utilizzo (mirino per la sd4, monitor per la dp3), a continuare con le filosofie progettuali che prevedono ottiche dedicate ed incorporate nella serie dp, intercambiabili invece per l'altra mirrorless, a finire con la differente risoluzione, di 15,4 /25 Mpx per la serie dp, ad arrivare ai 29,5 /39 Mpx (la seconda cifra indica il valore di equivalenza ad una matrice Bayer).

    "I difetti, quelli, si prendono tutti"  diceva mio nonno e Sigma conferma un assunto che le deriva certamente dalle difficolta' di processo di un file che nella densita' di informazioni ha il suo principale e indiscutibile vanto.
    Nessuna delle mirrorless dei due sistemi e' esente dalla difficolta' di messa a fuoco del soggetto, specie fuori dal riferimento centrale, dalla limitatissima quantita' di aree di messa a fuoco, dalle difficolta' di metabolizzazione del file RAW, sia on camera, sia in postproduzione.
    Incapaci di amplificare il segnale rispetto al rumore, sono sistemi che vanno utilizzati pochissimo oltre la sensibilita' nominale allo scopo di evitare di vanificare i pregi vantati.
    Ma il seguito che fin dalle prime versioni della serie dp, anche prima di quella presente, dedicata all'ing Merrill, ideatore del sensore, risulta giustificato dai risultati cromatici e di ricchezza di informazioni presenti su ognuno dei files cosi' difficilmente...partoriti.

    Qui potremo vedere come questa capacita' di lettura possa differire, a parita' di soggetto e condizioni di ripresa.
    Anche in maniera rilevante

  3. Sigma dp0 Quattro: the power of imagination

    Arrives from MTrading  when even on my countries rains and the sky is not 'bright as in the summer, the widest of SIGMA dp Quattro, featuring Foveon X3 sensor, the only three-layer RGB vertical, defined by Sigma "direct image sensor", this Sigma dp0 Quattro, showing a 14mm f/4 lens, that on the APS-C sensor becomes a 21mm equivalent: a real wideangle, at last !
    It occurs within the austere white box that characterizes the current packaging dress

    and here it is in all its shocking form of a can, on a Z-shaped handle (for better cooling needs of the internal electronics)

    but equipped of paradoxal tech dates, in terms of MTF tests provided by Sigma: we will see about it ...
